Another lockdown recording

The choir is now preparing to resume in-person rehearsals for the 2021-22 season, but we have been far from quiet during the second and third lockdowns. In the wake of our recording of Caledonia (see post 15 September 2020), a much more ambitious effort has seen the choir record four movements of CV Stanford’s Mass in Bflat; these were then skilfully put together by two contacts of our musical director.

Back together again

We’ve been rehearsing via Zoom throughout the lockdowns and it has worked well thanks to the hard work of our Musical Director, Alan Tavener, and the commitment of members. Nevertheless, it was great to have the chance – once Glasgow was eased into Level 2 – to finally meet in person in June and sing together in harmony once more! The park in Rotten Row opposite Strathclyde University provided an excellent backdrop to our socially distanced rehearsal and everyone enjoyed really seeing each other again.

Following a summer break we’re very much hoping to be able to start proper indoor rehearsals again in the autumn and have a tentative but potentially full programme of concerts and church services in the making.

Locked down but not out

Our last live outing (a wonderful Choral Evensong at St Bride’s Church, Glasgow) took place just before the first lockdown in March. We had great plans for the remainder of 2020: a weekend residency at York Minster, concerts in East Lothian and Glasgow’s West End Festival, and our 40th Anniversary Choral Evensong, again at St Bride’s. However, we have moved successfully to weekly online Zoom rehearsals. These are a great mix of vocal training, learning a variety of music with a view to future performances, and also some fun social activities such as quizzes and a Halloween extravaganza! We also made our very first virtual recording, which you can view below. We have plans to make more recordings, so watch this space..! If you are interested in joining the choir, we would love to hear from you. Email our Musical Director, Alan Tavener, at conductor@strathclydechoir.org We look forward to seeing you online!
